Nordic
Walking is quickly becoming one of the hottest new fitness
trends in the United States. Recently named one of the
top 10 trends for 2006 by the NBC Today Show, Nordic
Walking can be simply explained as fitness walking with poles
or cross-country skiing without the skis. Like cross-country
skiing, Nordic Walking is a highly aerobic activity that effectively
engages the upper body while walking.

Some
of the physical benefits of Nordic Walking include: up to
40% increase in calorie burn, increase of heart rate of 5-17
beats per minute, lower rate of perceived exertion, and lower
impact on the joints.
Nordic
Walking targets a wide range of consumers who can benefit
from Nordic Walking. Another great feature of Nordic
Walking is that you can Nordic Walk anywhere -- on the sidewalks,
trails and even the beach. You can even Nordic Walk
year round, with the proper footwear (snowshoes, lightweight/non-technical
crampons, or shoes made to handle snow and ice) as well as
a snow basket accessory for Exel’s poles.

August of 2003, and it is quickly gaining momentum across
the country. Exel’s commitment to the growth of
Nordic Walking as a new sport to the US includes the building
of a strong base of consumer awareness through an extensive
instructor network, live demonstrations at local events throughout
the country, and partnerships with retail establishments who

ways to get outside, get fit, and still have a great time.
